Day Five:
South bus first visited Historic Mill Creek and learned from sawyer Mr. Ed about 19th century lumber processing tools and techniques. A student volunteer got to learn first-hand the grueling work of the pitman saw operator and then Mr. Ed demonstrated the water powered mill in action.
Next we took a ferry out into Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. We visited the fort on its bicentennial, viewing cannon and rifle demonstrations and exhibits of daily life in the fort. After that, students got to play tourists on the island's main shopping street, loading up on the famous and ubiquitous fudge.
Always a highlight of the Odyssey East trip, this day was made even more special because of the numerous compliments paid to our group by the other visitors to the island for their restraint and considerateness.
