Fall & Winter Athletics Update!

Fall Athletics:

Soccer:

The Charter Stars Soccer team played coed this season. It was a tough season with no wins, but it was also a growth and development season with outstanding effort put in by Great River player Adah Satre-Pratt (A1) and Coach Melanie Peterson-Nafziger. Head Coach Sovatha Oum is working to put together a futsal program this winter to continue developing the team and spur interest in the program. 

Cross Country: 

Charter Stars Cross Country had a great season, with every runner achieving personal best times. Great River students Hugh Maclaughlin (A2), Vasyl Shevtsov (A2), Marina Rock (A3), and Sara Christians (A1) ran this season. Marina and Sara ran in the Conference race last week and a few of our athletes will be running in Sections this week. The Sections race is Thursday, Oct. 26 at 4pm at Battle Creek Regional Park.

Volleyball:
  • The Charter Stars have had their best Volleyball season to date! We had three levels of Volleyball - C, JV, and Varsity this season 
    • C Team finished with 7 wins and 2 losses
    • JV finished with 7 wins and 7 losses
    • Varsity finished with 9 wins and 7 losses
  • The Varsity Volleyball team achieved a 1st place finish in their conference division - they will get a banner that says Regular Season Division Champions
  • The Varsity Volleyball team won 2nd place in their division in the recent conference tournament
  • The Varsity Volleyball team plays their first Sections game this Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7pm at St. Paul Academy ($8 entry for adults, $6 for students)
  • Great River players Zoé Mulvihill (A1), Kate Walseth (A1), and Hannah Walseth (A1) were all outstanding players! They are a great addition to the Charter Stars family and we look forward to them playing again in future years.
Football:

GRS A3 student Noah Hanson plays starting fullback, pass receiver, wing back, and (sometimes) quarterback for the Wolfpack football team. He is also the gunner on the kickoff team and the holder for P.A.T.'s and field goals. Noah, who is one of this year's captains, is player #4 catching a touchdown pass in the photo below. 

Head Coach Collin Quinn encourages each of the players to "give yourself to something that is bigger than yourself" and "live a life of significance." He encourages parents to "be there and care." 
The players spent 3 days in August doing service work at Lake Beauty Retreat Center in Long Prairie, MN.

The Wolfpack have had a strong season and play in Sections this week. The team plays on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7pm at Blake School vs. Orono. Entry into the game is $8 for adults and $6 for students. If the Wolfpack wins on Tuesday, they will play again on Saturday at Benilde St. Margaret's.

Winter Athletics:

This year High School/Charter Stars sports are:
  • Girls' Basketball (grades 7-12) - practices start Monday, Nov. 13
  • Coed Nordic Ski (grades 7-12) - practices start Monday, Nov. 13
  • Boys' Hockey (grades 8-12) - practices start Monday, Nov. 13 at St. Paul Academy
  • Cheerleading (grades 9-12) - practices start Monday, Nov. 20
  • Boys' Basketball (grades 7-12) - practices start Monday, Nov. 20
Register for High School/Charter Stars winter athletics! All registration paperwork is due by Friday, Oct. 27. Activity Fees and Uniform Deposits must be paid by the first day of tryouts/practices. Late registrations cannot be accepted because we need to plan the sports season and require accurate numbers to be successful.
