- Description of Parent Ed Event: An Introduction to Executive Function
- This event is designed for both elementary and adolescent families!
- Executive Functions help us to plan, focus our attention, remember directions, and manage tasks successfully. They provide the skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, control impulses, and set and achieve goals. Scientists say that the executive functions of a child are better predictors at school readiness and success than their IQ.
- That means that understanding and supporting executive functioning is essential work for both parents and educators. In this presentation, Matt McElrath (adolescent level) and Jean Peters (elementary level) will outline the basic elements of executive functioning and why it is essential to cultivate throughout our lives - and especially in childhood and young adulthood! After the presentation there will be time for some questions and a group discussion. We will also share a list of resources for developing executive functioning skills at home with your child.
