ParenTeen Transitions Begins Next Wednesday

Please join us as we kick off ParenTeen Transitions on Wednesday, November 2nd from 7:00-8:30 pm at GRS in the Upper Commons!

Topic: I Spy a Double Life: What Your Teens are Watching Online and Who is Watching Your Teen
Speaker will be Criminal Intelligence Analyst Karl Kangas. The presentation will cover indicators of possible exploitation of our children. We will talk about how traffickers use social media, and what you can do to identify persons wanting to exploit our children, and how traffickers tend to work. There will be time for questions following the talk.

Bio: Karl Kangas is a Criminal Intelligence Analyst with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Officer. He has been at his current position for eight years. Previously he was with St Paul Police Narcotics and Vice Response Team. Prior to that he was with the Minnesota Department of Corrections, Office of Special Investigation.

ParenTeen Transitions is an informal parent gathering centered around adolescent developmental/life stages. The focus is on sharing information and supporting one another. Some speakers and “experts” may be asked to come to present on a certain topic if the group chooses.

Gatherings at GRS
  • Wed Nov 2  7:00-8:30 pm I Spy A Double Life
  • Wed Jan 11 7:00-8:30 pm OWL (Our Whole Lives) Sex Ed Curriculum + Speaker Sex talk with your teens (they really want you to listen more than talk!). We will look at the OWL curriculum and create conversation starters so our teens trust us as their resource for accurate, non-judgmental information. A speaker from Family Tree Clinic will share useful resources.
  • Wed April 12 7:00-8:30 pm  Grit (TED Talk + Our Talk) Resilience will be the focus as we figure out strategies for teens & families to strengthen each other and build inner resourcefulness.

Monthly Friday evening book discussions hosted in a GRS parent's home

  • The group will read (or skim or read at the gathering- no pressure!) the book How to Talk So Teens Will Listen and Listen so Teens Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. We will glean wisdom from the experts, share our experiences and help one another along on this parenting journey. PLUS: Bring your teen and they can hang out with other teens and have a book club of their own. Book or activity TBD by the group.
