Good News: Pedestrian Safety for Great River Community

From Great River Parent, Susan Sochacki:

Great news regarding pedestrian safety at Pierce Butler Route and Hamline Avenue North. There was a crosswalk enforcement event there yesterday morning AND Saint Paul Police officers will be presenting pedestrian safety information to elementary students on Wednesday, November 18 before they head on to their park adventures that day. SPPD will also accompany students to PBR and Hamline for another crosswalk enforcement event pending their availability.
Special thanks to the St. Paul Police Department and MN Toward Zero Deaths.

Report from SPPD:
Conducted on November 4, 2015, this event was focused on the Great River School’s route to school for many of their students, in the area of Pierce Butler Route and Hamline. The officers made contact with approximately 18 pedestrians (many were on bikes) and conducted general education contacts, which included giving out printed pedestrian safety cards and other materials. Police officers issued 1 citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a cross walk. Officers issued 1 citation to a driver who failed to obey the ‘No Left Turn’ WB on PBR to SB Hamline. Officers issued 1 citation for Seat Belt Violation. Officers Issued 2 citations for speeding (both were going well over the 40 mph speed limit, as well as the 25 mph school zone limit). Officers issued 2 other citations and 2 other warnings.

The driver who was stopped and cited for the failure to yield to a pedestrian told the officer that he was “paying attention to the Semi truck” in front of him and “didn’t see the pedestrians.”
