Upper Elementary Widji Trip - Day Two

Brian D. Ropers-Huilman, UE Parent & Widji Chaperone writes:

Widji Day 2:  The children were up and at breakfast by 08:00 and then broke into their study groups to either do a Forestry talk and hike, or learn about and do some canoeing. The day was beautiful again and everyone had a great time. Best of all, nobody tipped a canoe! We enjoyed a fabulous lunch of home-made wild rice chicken soup and then the groups switched activities for the afternoon.
When we gathered again, it was time to learn about the cycle of energy in the living world, including predators and their prey, and then we played the game all of the children had been looking forward to: Predator and Prey, where there are owls, weasels, and voles, plus the occasional disease or famine, just to spice things up. There was a lot of running and fun going on! We had a huge taco dinner then watched a fascinating talk, including some great, and sometimes funny, videos about birds.

Be sure to ask your children about the Ruffed Grouse beating its wings. By then it was dark outside and the children went out to enjoy another Widji favorite: flashlight tag! We had them all back in their cabins around 9:00 and by all accounts everyone went to sleep easily and quickly, dreaming of the Eco Hike they'd take all day Thursday. More adventures to come!
