Upper Elementary: Widji Letter

Dear Families,
The upper elementary classes are gearing up for our trip to Camp Widjiwagan September 29! We will depart at 7:30 am on Tuesday, September 29 and return by 3:10 on Friday, October 2. There is no school for upper el on Monday, October 5 for trip recovery.

Going to Widjiwagan is a really fun and exciting experience for the children. We keep them busy and involved in experiencing the outdoors through activities and classes. This minimizes homesickness, helps the children make new connections with their classmates and builds great memories of camp.

The packing list can be found at http://www.ymcatwincities.org/_asset/fnhssm/wi_OLP-Clothing-List-Fall-Spring.pdf.

Sixth year children (and only 6th years) have the option of going to the sauna on our last evening and should pack a swimsuit and towel if they plan to do so.
Please remember that personal snacks and electronics are not allowed at Widjiwagan. Electronics are also not allowed on the bus, so please simply leave them at home. Cameras are welcome, as are backpacks with activities for the bus such as cards, books, activity books, etc.

From the Widjiwagan Website:
Minnesota's northern forests are truly a place for curiosity, discovery and exploration. Since 1973, Widji has combined environmental education with experiential learning to introduce school groups from 10 to 90 students to the magic and wonder of the north.
Each activity is an opportunity for discovery, and we keep the idea of "learning by doing" central to our philosophy.

We believe strongly in individualized instruction. Many of our lessons take place in small study groups, where student-to-staff ratios are usually 8 to 1 or lower.
Our activities and presentations take advantage of Widji's unique wilderness setting.
Will we still go outside even if the weather is cold or wet?
Our goal is to show you how to stay comfortable no matter what the weather. Before you come to Widji, you'll receive a clothing list. By following it carefully, you should be well prepared to stay comfortable outside in all sorts of weather. If you don't have something on the clothing list, Widji has extra gear you may borrow.

Shortly after you arrive at camp, we'll give you an orientation on how to dress to be outside in all types of weather conditions. Finally, before heading outside for our classes and activities, your Widji instructor will check to make sure you are dressed to stay warm and comfortable.
